Faculty of Economics, CMU Organizes “Debate to Decide” Forum on Evidence-Based Economic Policy
On 14 January 2025, the Faculty of Economics, Chiang Mai University, organized an academic debate forum entitled “Debate to Decide: Economic Policy Choices” to provide a platform for constructive discussions on economic policies, public policy alternatives, and national development strategies. The forum aimed to promote informed dialogue grounded in economic principles and empirical evidence while encouraging participation from academia, political representatives, and young people in shaping the future direction of the country.
The event brought together representatives from various political parties to share perspectives and present their economic policy proposals, including:
- Mr. Suradej Taweesangsakulthai – Thai Sang Thai Party
- Mr. Worapop Viriyaroj – People's Party
- Mr. Korn Chatikavanij – Democrat Party
- Mr. Chris Potaranan – Economic Party
- Mr. Paopoom Rojanasakul – Pheu Thai Party
The discussion was moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Rossarin Osathanunkul, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Chiang Mai University. Joining the discussion panel were Faculty members Dr. Patcha Siwapornpitak, Dr. Tossaporn Qprasopsak, and Dr. Jirapa Inthasaeng Thojim, who facilitated the debate through questions and critical discussion on key economic issues.
The forum was structured around six major policy themes that have attracted significant public attention:
- Taxation and government revenue
- Cash transfer and subsidy policies
- Enhancing business competitiveness and addressing economic challenges
- Aging society, retirement age extension, and social welfare systems
- Policy agenda proposed by the Chiang Mai University Student Union
- Policy agenda proposed by the Economics Student Association, Chiang Mai University
The event reflected the Faculty’s role as a neutral academic platform that encourages evidence-based discussion and reasoned debate on issues of public importance. By bringing together diverse viewpoints from across the political spectrum, the forum provided participants with deeper insights into economic policy alternatives while fostering critical thinking and informed public engagement.
Through initiatives such as “Debate to Decide,” the Faculty of Economics reaffirms its commitment to advancing public understanding of economic issues and promoting policy discussions grounded in academic knowledge, evidence, and constructive dialogue for the sustainable development of Thailand.
