Abstract:

This study aims to study the factors that affect to household’s debt and debt-bearing behavior of the population in Amphur Muang district Chiang Mai Province by using questionnaire in order to collect data of sample group, people who live or work in Amphur Muang, Chiangmai Province. Then, use the collected data to analyze in debt behavior of the sample group by using descriptive statistics to describe characteristics and indebt-behavior of the sample group and using Multiple Linear Regression Analysis in order to study how is the relationship the between debt condition and various factors. The study found that 90% of the sample group is in debt. Most of them have more than one type of debt with all types of liabilities not exceeding 500,000 baht and have the obligation to pay for the debt per month not exceeding 5,000 baht. For Multiple Regression Analysis, it was found that the factors affecting the value of debt in a positive direction, statistically significant and most influence to the value of the debt, is total household’s income, followed by total household’s expenditure, period of occupation/period of employment and residential tenure, respectively. It could mean that when there is raising in total household’s income total household’s expenditure, period of occupation/period of employment and residential tenure requirements would increase in value of debt and decision to be in debt as well. In addition, the study found that factors about accessing to credit resources, information about credit products, recognizing and understanding credit product information and easiness and more convenience in applying for a loan nowadays affects the debt of the sample group. Moreover, Marketing factors of financial institutions include 0% installment promotion, promotional discounts on spending, Cash Back promotion and public relations on credit products in various media affects to decision to be in debt of all sample groups.
