ABSTRACT
The study had 3 objectives, which were to find out personal information, factors affecting school choices, and expenses of Chinese students who were studying in Chiang Mai Province. Data were collected by using questionnaires with 400 Chinese students. Statistics used in data analysis were descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, including t-test and One-way ANOVA.
The findings showed that 80 percent of Chinese students were female, aged between 19-23 years old of 92.50 percent. 52.80 percent of these students were from Yunnan. Most of them chose to study at the Language Institute Chiang Mai University and to stay at dormitories outside the campus at 45.50 percent. 93.50 percent of these students used their own budget for educational fees. They attached most importance to push factors and pull factors. To examine the difference of personal data with the factors affecting school choices, it was found that the difference of gender could affect their decisions to choose learning foreign cultures, courses, study cost, advertisement, and location of universities. Students with different domiciles had different decision making in their self-development needs, social needs, stability and progress in life, courses, image of universities, study cost, advertisement, and location of universities. Moreover, students with different faculties had different decision making in social needs, image and location of universities, knowledge and ability of instructors, as well as teaching and learning management.
In term of expenses, educational expenses and personal expenses were included. The most educational expenses were registration fees and fees. In one semester, students had the average of educational expenses of 8,907.02 yuan. The most personal expenses were food and beverage with the average of 3,218.44 yuan for each month. Therefore, the average of personal expenses were 56,435.32 yuan per person per year or 282,176.60 baht per year (exchange rate of Chinese Yuan to Thai Baht was 1 yuan to 5 baht). To make a comparison between undergraduate study program and exchange program, it was found that students in undergraduate study programs had higher expenses of registration fees and fees than students in exchange program, while expenses of textbook were similar to expenses of school supplies. Moreover, students in undergraduate study program had higher expenses of accommodation, clothing and transportation than students in exchange programs, while the expense of medical fees was similar. Finally, students in exchange programs had higher expenses of food and beverage, leisure and other activities than students in undergraduate study program.
