The objectives of this research were to evaluate and compare the competency of workers in the tourism industry focusing on hotel management under the term of liberalization of the ASEAN tourism sector in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Questionnaires were used as an instrument to collect data from 400 Thai workers in the tourism industry sector focusing on hotel management in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai by convenience sampling. Data analysis had been performed based on Descriptive Statistics, including Frequency, Percentage and Mean as well as Inferential Statistics which were F-Test (One Way ANOVA) and T-Test (Independent Samples). The result of this study could be summarized as follows:
According to the sample’s replies, the study indicated that the majority of them were female under 30 years old. The highest education was the bachelor degree in Hotel Management. They had less than 3 years work experience. The salary plus other remunerations from hotel work were between 10,000 – 20,000 Baht. They worked in the small size hotels with a 4 star standard in the reception and positioned as the operation staff.
The overall competency of workers in the tourism industry relating to hotel management under the term of liberalization of the ASEAN tourism sector in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai were found in the high level. To clarify, the competency in personality and attitude towards operation were in the highest level while the competency in skill and knowledge were in the high level.
Due to the comparison of the competency of workers in the tourism industry regarding in hotel management under the term of liberalization of the ASEAN tourism sector in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the result revealed that the workers were generally graduated at least a bachelor degree in management. They had been working for more than 7 years. Moreover, they worked in the reception and earned a salary and other remunerations more than 20,000 Baht per month. They worked in the 4 and 5 star hotel and tended to have quite high competency in knowledge, skill, personality and attitude toward working.
Finally, with regard to the limitation of workers in the tourism industry focusing on hotel management under the term of liberalization of the ASEAN tourism sector, the study showed that the workers had a restriction in communicating in English or other foreign languages. Furthermore, they had an impediment in knowledge concerning social, economic and politic situation, including other issues about ASEAN countries, respectively. Corresponding to those limitations, the public and private sectors as well as the hotels should pay attention in constantly and appropriately developing knowledge and skills for workers. Training courses in communication with English language or other languages, ASEAN Community information and social, economic, politic and other ASEAN situations should be arranged continually and suitably.
