Master of Economics Program
Faculty of Economics Chiang Mai University
The Faculty of Economics at the Chiang Mai University was once an Economics Department within the Faculty of Social Sciences, under which it first offered undergraduate economics degree program in 1964 when the Chiang Mai University was established. In August 28, 1992, the Faculty of Economics was founded. Over the years, the Faculty has made many progresses in curriculum development, research and community services. Currently, the Faculty of Economics offers economics degree program at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels.
Currently, the Faculty of Economics is the only educational institute in Northern Thailand that produces graduates at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral levels to meet societal and communities’ needs.
Curriculum and the degree requirement.

In addition to the core requirement, elective courses in the following fields are being offered.
- economic theory
- quantitative economics
- international economics
- monetary economics and public economics
- natural resource economics

Course requirements
Holders of an undergraduate degree, from any discipline, can be admitted to the CMU master of economics degree program. To allow for diversity and cross learning, the degree program won’t be compartmentalized into an area of specialization. Course requirements are as following.
Regular master degree program (with thesis requirement). Classes will be held in regular hours from Mondays to Fridays for two-year duration. And the course requirement is at least 42 credit hours consisting of 18 credit hours of core courses, 12 hours of field courses and another 12 credit hours for thesis. In addition, students will have to pass foreign language test which is required by the Graduate School.
Special master degree program (weekends) (with requirement to conduct an independent studies). Classes will be held on Saturdays and Sundays from 9.00-16.00hrs for two- year duration. The course requirement is at least 42 credit hours consisting of 18 credit hours of core courses, 18 hours of field courses and another 6 credit hours for independent studies. In addition, students will have to pass foreign language test which is required by the Graduate School.
Accelerated master degree program (one year) (with requirement to conduct an independent studies). Classes will be held on Mondays to Fridays from 17.00-20.30hrs for one year duration. The course requirement is at least 42 credit hours consisting of 18 credit hours of core courses, 18 hours of field courses and another 6 credit hours for independent studies. In addition, students will have to pass foreign language test which is required by the Graduate School.
Bilingual master degree program For duration of 18 months (or three semesters) , students will take classes at 751 sequence taught in English in Module type with either of the two research plans as follows.
Plan 1 Thesis plan. Students will take 10 courses (carrying 30 credit hours) and do thesis (carrying another 12 credit hours) making 42 total credit hours. And students will have to pass a foreign language test which is required by the Graduate School.Stuckture for Plan 1
Plan 2 Independent studies plan. Students will take 12 courses (carrying 36 credit hours) and do independent studies (carrying 6 credit hours) making 42 total credit hours. And students will have to pass a foreign language test which is required by the Graduate School.Stuckture for Plan 2
